Current Controlled Boost LED Driver and Black Soldermasks

The MAX16834 is a neat little chip (it's not the only one, there are plenty of others out there) that allows high efficiency designs for LED string driving. It provides a platform for a Buck or Boost converter design, as well as brightness adjustment via analog/PWM input pins, as well as a fault output (in case of open/short circuits for example) and also diverse other functionalities that can be quite useful. A Li-Ion Battery Charger with Load Sharing - MCP73837

Batteries often serve as the main energy source for portable electronic devices. Although they depend on batteries, portable consumer electronic products, such as GPS devices and multi-media players, often consume energy directly from an ac-dc wall adapter or accessory power adapter (or “Auto Adapter”) when the battery is low or the device is in a stationary mode. Due to their cost effectiveness over their useful life, rechargeable batteries are often used for the power source of the portable electronic device.

Designing A Li-Ion Battery Charger with Load Sharing - MCP73837

Attributes such as “relatively high energy density” and “maintenance free” make Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) batteries popular in the portable consumer electronic products. Refer to the application note, AN1088, “Selecting the Right Battery System For cost Sensitive Portable Applications While maintaining Excellent Quality” (DS01088) for characteristics of Li-Ion batteries. Some examples of how to properly design with Li-Ion batteries will be discussed in this application note. [Link]

Charge Controller Design for Maximum Battery Lifetime in PV Systems

For any complete energy-harvesting system designed to provide power to anything but small, short-duration loads, storage batteries represent a necessary but significant portion of the initial expense. The cost of batteries over the lifetime of the system can have an even larger impact if care is not taken to maximize the useful life of the battery component.

What’s more, if unit growth continues for photovoltaic and other energy-harvesting systems relying on large-capacity storage batteries, designs that fail to maximize battery life could have a negative environmental impact due to the extra material and energy consumption needed to manufacture replacement systems as well as dispose of exhausted units.[Link]

Watering Plant with Arduino

Plants liven up any space by adding a sense of airiness and life. That is – of course – when you don’t forget to water them, and they shrivel up and die. I am very bad at remembering to water plants. That is why I built this self-watering plant to do it for me. Using a soil sensor, and an Arduino-controlled water pump, I have created a system that will never forget to do it.

Making A Self-Watering Plant with Arduino

Instead of remembering to water my plants when the soil goes dry, I only have to remember to once and a while refill the water reservoir. In this way, I have decreased my obligation to these plants and put it off to a much later date. Perhaps further iterations of this device can be connected to a rain barrel so that I won’t even have to worry about refilling my reservoir, and the entire system can be fully automated. [Link]

The Smallest Arduino Clone Possible

Everybody are making Arduino clones. So I thought I should make THE smallest. I took smallest package atmega88 – 28qfn (5mm x 5mm). Routed smallest possible resonator and as much pads as i could fit on in. The result – Smallest Arduino clone ever! Size is only 7.4mm x 7.4mm! Features include:

  • Auto reset
  • UART
  • SPI
  • 4 analog channels
  • 1 digital i/o
  • one LED
  • funny readme with BOM
It needs arduino bootloader for atmega88 like ottantotto bootloader, probably it needs some hacking too because the resonator is 8MHz not the Arduino regular 16MHz. [Link]

Small FAT Arduino Library - SD Card Reader

The library supports FAT16 formatted SD cards up to 2GB in size. 4GB FAT16 formatted SD cards might work, but is untested. Long file names are not supported. Keep you file names compliant with the old 8.3 standard. The SD card should be connected to the SPI-pins on your Arduino. Pin connections are available in the documentation in the download. [Link]

Verision & HTC unveiled Droid DNA the First Smartphone with 5-inch 1080p Display

Just as expected the HTC event in New York was all about the DROID DNA for Verizon. The long-rumored beast of a smartphone finally went official. The DROID DNA offers a specs sheet similar to its Japanese sibling – the HTC J Butterfly. It features the first (actually world's first) of its kind 5-inch 1080p Super-LCD3 display and is powered by the Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset with a 1.5GHz quad-core Krait processor, Adreno 320 graphics and 2GB of RAM.
