 Samsung Galaxy S5 confirmed for MWC

While rumours have started to swirl over whether or not Samsung will reveal their much-anticipated Galaxy S5 smartphone at Mobile World Congress later this month, the organizing committee has confirmed that they will indeed.

Samsung recently sent out invitations to Samsung Unpacked 5, to be held at Mobile World Congress, and an accompanying video hinted that visitors might get a glimpse of the device. While it wasn’t confirmed, Mobile World Live confirmed the rumours.

“Samsung is set to launch its Galaxy S5 smartphone at Mobile World Congress this month, having announced its Unpacked 5 event will be held in Barcelona. The company will hold an event on the evening of Monday 24 February, marking the first time it has unveiled a flagship device at the event since the Galaxy S2 in 2011,” they said.

Late last year several media houses pegged the reveal around March with a consumer launch in April, but Mobile World Live said that the date has been brought forward – for several reasons. “The launch has been brought forward due to lower than expected sales of the Galaxy S4. Bringing the new device to market more quickly will enable it to reinvigorate its performance after a tough Q4.”

They added that the S5 would be one of the most important releases for Samsung. “The new flagship is especially important for Samsung’s position in the high-end smartphone market, where growth is hard to find and competition is fierce. In this space, the company has lost some momentum following Apple’s latest iPhone update.”

If you chose the Samsung Galaxy S3 due to its large display and you are not technically minded then you might be happy to know you can choose to activate an easy UI mode on your device. This means that you will have large pre-set widgets and a simplified setup. All you have to do to get the mode is go into settings and choose the home screen mode.

When you are in contacts you can easily call or text people by swiping. All you have to do is swipe left to right if you want to call someone or right to left if you want to text someone.

If you want to save battery you can use the power saving feature. This mode will change many aspects on your phone, including screen brightness, haptic feedback, CPU speed and the colour of the web browser’s background.

Those people who take videos on their Samsung Galaxy S3 will be pleased to know that editing is possible and simple. You can trim your videos on the handset via the app in the drawer.

If you want to view webpages offline than you can store web pages into the memory of the Samsung Galaxy S3 and read them at any time. All you have to do is hit the soft key menu button and then pick save for offline reading.

While you can use the Kies software for transferring photos, video and other files to your handset there is also the option to drag and drop. You can also sync your Samsung Galaxy S3 through Wi-Fi thanks to it.

You are not limited to one specific video format on the device as the S3 recognises many different formats. This means that you don’t have to worry about converting video before watching it on your handset.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with support for panoramic photos. This means that you can capture not just what’s in front of you, but also what’s to the sides.

If you lose your Samsung Galaxy S3 or it is stolen you have the option to wipe it remotely. You can do this by signing up to Samsung online and if your device is lost you can use the Find my Phone feature.

Finally there is a hidden Easter egg on the S3. If you want to see a Jelly Bean face on your device just keep clicking on the Android version and it will pop up. If you keep your finger pressed down on the face, your display will fill with jellybeans.[via]

New Delhi: While Samsung is highly expected to show off its new Galaxy Note smartphone on September 4, a new report from Bloomberg claims that the South Korean giant will also unveil its long-rumoured smart watch, unofficially dubbed 'Galaxy Gear', at the September 4 event. 

Citing two people familiar with the matter, the report says that the smart watch can make phone calls, surf the Web and handle e-mails. The Galaxy Gear smartwatch will be powered by Google's Android OS and is likely to go on sale this year. 

Samsung Electronics has already applied for US and South Korean trademarks for a watch that connects to the Internet in the latest sign that consumer technology companies see wearable devices as the future of their business.[via]

Samsung unveils 'secretive' smartphone SCH-W789

Samsung looks to have taken the humming world of personalised tech gadgetry by surprise today by officially launching the highly rumored, but quite secretive, Samsung SCH-W789 Android-based flip phone in China on Wednesday. Samsung has simply branded the phone with its model number without giving it any personality, unlike the Samsung Galaxy smartphones that received attention akin to the birth of the Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, and husband Prince William's royal child in Britain recently.
Samsung SCH-W789 will be available for the China Telecom users for about $800. 

Features wise, Samsung SCH-W789 Android flip phone comes with dual 3.3 inch HVGA touch screen displays with the resolution of 320x480 pixels. It is running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system version and it is powered by a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Quad Core processor along with 1GB of RAM memory. It is a dual SIM device with CDMA + GSM support with dual-standby features. Connectivity features of the phone include Bluetooth, WiFi, Micro USB and GPS. It also boasts a relatively staid, when compared to HTC One, 5 mega pixel rear camera with LED flash. 

There is no information on the internal storage of the phone at the moment but it comes with microSD card slot to expend the memory. The phone is powered by a 1500 mAh battery and it comes with pre-loaded applications like Samsung Apps and Chat On messaging. 

It will be available on China Telecom for 4999 yuan (about $816). There is no word on whether the phone will be released in any other market globally but another Android flip phone that has been seen is the Samsung Galaxy Folder that might be launched globally. via Muhammad Zulqarnain Zulfi

ATIV S is a steeled up device that seems ready to take on the best
Its that step we have been curious about, whether the brand would take what is a hot seller in the Android space to Windows 8. Well, we have got a glimpse of the ATIVA S, Samsungs first step into the Windows 8 arena. Impressive looking device, we must admit, massive 4.3” screen [AMOLED HD of course], 1.5GHz Dual Core ARM-based Krait processor, 2300mAh battery with a 16GB core memory expandable via micro SD and an 8MB AF+ LED Flash camera.

We loved that full brushed aluminum feel which is carried across the ATIV Smart PC options as well. It gives the phone a very solid feel, and the responsiveness pointed to a device that should be taken seriously in the days to come. Make that very.

New Samsung Galaxy S4 landing at Mobile World in Feb

Citing unnamed supply chain sources, as well as what we’re guessing are some better informed sorts within Samsung, the Korea Times claims that the phone will land in February at the Mobile World Congress.

The handset is apparently set to hit retailers shortly after in March – just nine months after the release of its predecessor.

In news that’s unlikely to surprise anyone on nodding terms with prevailing trends in smartphone upgrades, Samsung’s new kit will purportedly pack a larger five-inch OLED screen – up from the S3’s 4.8-inches - and international 4G LTE support.

An unnamed deepthroat said: “Samsung wants to keep its one-year product schedule and the Galaxy S4 will be the first to match that strategy.

“The S4 will see some external changes but retain its popular rectangular shape with rounded corner concept.”

News of Samsung’s plans comes as it recently announced that the S3 has now sold some 20 million units, making it the company’s fastest-selling phone ever.

Samsung launches the Omnia M Windows Phone in Europe

Samsung is launching the Omnia M, a new Windows Phone 7-based device, in Europe. The Windows Phone 7.5-equipped handset ships with a 4-inch Super AMOLED display and 1GHz processor. The device features a minimalist design with rounded edges and a curved back. According to Samsung, the case was designed ergonomically so it "sits comfortably in your hand."

The real focus of the Omnia M is its social features, which include access to the company's Family Story, a cloud-based network for family members to share messages, videos, and photos. Samsung has also bundled its ChatON service with the device, allowing users to engage in group chatting and messaging across several platforms, including iOS and Android.

It's been a busy week for Samsung's Windows Phone business. Earlier this week, the company unveiled the Samsung Focus 2, a $50 Windows Phone boasting a 4-inch Super AMOLED display and 4G LTE support. That device is going on sale May 20 on AT&T's network.

The Omnia M, on the other hand, will be coming to Europe first. Samsung said today that it plans to roll out the Omnia M to other regions, but didn't say when it'll start doing so. Link

Does the world really need yet another digital camera? The correct answer would be an unequivocal and resounding, “Yes!”. Well, you know that the camera industry is going to continue moving forward with ever higher resolution, not to mention advancements in video recording technology, but how about the operating system of the camera? That has more often than not been overlooked, so Samsung might be on to something here with their maiden attempt at an Android-powered camera, the Samsung Galaxy Camera. Yes sir, we are referring to the mobile operating system from Google that sees actions on smartphones and tablets, now making its way to a camera. How does it fare? The Samsung Galaxy Camera can be said to be a smartphone sans the “phone” bit. After all, it will come with the most recent Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system, not to mention carry a slew of connectivity options that would even turn some smartphones green with envy – such as 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi support. I am not quite sure whether mobile carriers will soon put the Samsung Galaxy Camera up for sale on a 2-year contract with a data plan thrown in for good, but time will tell.

The Samsung Galaxy Camera can be said to be the best Android-powered dedicated camera at this point in time, as its only competitor would be the Nikon Coolpix S800c, but that certainly loses out to the Samsung Galaxy Camera in many aspects. For instance, the Samsung Galaxy Camera has the latest Android operating system version as opposed to Android 2.3 Gingerbread on the S800c, while it has a 21x optical touch zoom lens (vs 10x optical zoom on the Nikon) and a 16-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor.

Samsung Galaxy Note II Unveiled: 5.5-inch HD Super AMOLED Display, Android

Well, hopefully, you aren’t tired of hearing about the Galaxy Note II yet; Samsung has finally made their announcement and released the official details. The leak earlier this morning pretty much had it nailed, but let’s go through the list now that it’s official.

Naturally, the screen is the highlight here. It’s an enormous 5.5-inch HD Super AMOLED display at 1280×720. Early hands-on are showing that, while it is perhaps not quite up to the caliber of the HTC One X screen, it is a vast improvement over the Pentile displays we were seeing previously.

The other signature feature is the S pen. The handwriting experience in general and that has been upgraded, as well. The pen itself is a bit larger, making it easier to handle, and the digitizer in the Note II supports 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity–4x that of the original.

Powering the Note II is a 1.6 GHz quad-core Exynos processor with 2 GB of RAM. I can’t imagine that won’t be sufficient to keep things humming along.

The battery is 3100 mAh (just shy of what Motorola crammed into the RAZR MAXX), but of course, with this kind of screen real estate, you’re going to need every bit of that battery.

As for the cameras: it’s a backside illuminated 8MP on the rear and a backside illuminated 1.9MP on the front. For the camera software there are some functions already familiar to us from the Galaxy S III including Buddy Photo Share, Burst Shot and Best Photo. But the Note II is also getting a feature called Best Faces, which will let you “choose the most preferred face or pose of each person from group portrait photos.”

As far as storage goes, we’re looking at the same options as the Galaxy S III: 16, 32 and 64GB models and a microSD slot to boost that even further if you wish.

The Note II will launch with Jelly Bean (as you would hope by now) and, of course, will have the TouchWiz overlay.

The two pieces that had been missing this morning were pricing and availability. We’ve now got half of that covered. The Galaxy Note II will go on sale in European, Asian and Middle Eastern markets in October with US availability coming “later in 2012.” Obviously, that doesn’t leave them with a huge window, so those of us in the US shouldn’t have to worry about waiting months before seeing the Note this time around.
