Its that step we have been curious about, whether the brand would take what is a hot seller in the Android space to Windows 8. Well, we have got a glimpse of the ATIVA S, Samsungs first step into the Windows 8 arena. Impressive looking device, we must admit, massive 4.3” screen [AMOLED HD of course], 1.5GHz Dual Core ARM-based Krait processor, 2300mAh battery with a 16GB core memory expandable via micro SD and an 8MB AF+ LED Flash camera.

We loved that full brushed aluminum feel which is carried across the ATIV Smart PC options as well. It gives the phone a very solid feel, and the responsiveness pointed to a device that should be taken seriously in the days to come. Make that very.

Victorinox is the most secure memory stick?

Victorinox has launched a memory stick design which is, says the company, the most secure of its kind available to the public. The Victorinox memory stick uses several layers of security including fingerprint identification and a thermal sensor.

Any attempt to forcibly open it triggers a self-destruct mechanism that irrevocably 

burns its CPU and memory chip. The data can only be accessed through recognition of your fingerprint or the password.
In addition to these functions, the Victorinox Secure also has a bright LED light that will reliably show you the way in the dark. With this tool as well, it goes without saying that you will not have to do without the indispensable Swiss Army Knife functions, such as a blade, nail file with screwdriver end, scissors and key ring.

A new version of the device, which will employ e-paper to give users a read-out of its contents, is already in the pipeline. Victorinox say they wanted to create not only a product for today’s modern lifestyle but a new generation of memory stick that had all the values of functionality and reliability that the iconic Swiss Army Knife has come to represent.

USB Function Generator Based on AD9833

One tool that I’ve been missing at my lab at home is function generator. They tend to be a bit expensive, so I haven’t bought one. I thought this might be a good opportunity to try and make one myself. I found a pretty common DDS (direct digital synthesis) chip, called AD9833. Then just strap a USB-enabled AVR micro there and maybe some analog electronics.

This board doesn’t do any of the special analog magic to allow for variable amplitude or offset for the signal. The output is fixed to 0-4v. I’m planning to make another completely analog board for adjusting amplitude and offset. [Link]

LED Heart PWM Fading

The concept for this small birthday present was to create a small heart shape with red LEDs and then to draw a heart shape underneath it on the PCB as a backdrop. Then a small processor was added to control the heart shape of LEDs for both fade and pattern control. The method of control that we use (PWM) allows us to save precious battery life, control the exact brightness of each specific LED and create this tiny but awesome project. [Link]

The MAX16834 is a neat little chip (it's not the only one, there are plenty of others out there) that allows high efficiency designs for LED string driving. It provides a platform for a Buck or Boost converter design, as well as brightness adjustment via analog/PWM input pins, as well as a fault output (in case of open/short circuits for example) and also diverse other functionalities that can be quite useful.
